I don’t know about you but whenever I enter a home decor shop I am instantly drawn to the beautiful textiles- specifically throw pillows.  Throw pillows can instantly and easily transform your space and take it to the next level looking thoughtfully designed and intentional.

From the bedroom to the living room to the outdoors, pillows add personality to your spaces and create that much needed finishing touch. They also provide a great opportunity for an inexpensive design switch up by keeping your main pieces fairly neutral and using the throw pillows to provide a pop of colour in your space.

In the bedroom, throw pillows layered high on your bed draw your eye to the largest piece of furniture in the space and create a sanctuary of comfort and style.

When it comes to the living room the possibilities are endless.  Use a collection of pillows to enhance an otherwise simple sofa, or place a single pillow on an armchair or slipper chair.  When styling pillows on a sofa it is best to start with the largest pillow at the back corners and work your way in finishing with the smallest.

Mixing a large simple print with a busier smaller print and a solid is a good formula to follow.  The rule of 3 is also useful when selecting a colour pallet, or if you prefer a simpler neutral design simply vary the textures to create visual interest and play with touch and feel.

Try different materials like faux fur, linen or velvet. Detailing like tassel, embroidery or fringe can also achieve this.  Grouping pillows in odd numbers creates a more modern look, while even numbers create a more traditional feel.

To achieve a full and fluffy look, a good rule of thumb is to purchase inserts that are 2” bigger on each side than the pillow cover.  For example if you have an 18’’x18’ pillow cover you will want a 20”x20” insert for fullness and to avoid a skimpy and deflated look.
