“Take time to do what makes your soul happy.” Unknown
Self-care might very well be the concept of the modern day. Everyone’s talking about it. But - what is it, really? And, truth be told, does anyone have time to do it?
Looking after yourself is an important part of living a happy and healthy life.
Self-care refers to activities and practices that you do regularly to maintain and enhance your own health and well-being. It’s more than the occasional cup of tea or neck rub or bubble bath. It’s about getting in touch with yourself – your wants, needs, passions – and prioritizing time for yourself to make those things happen.
Make the time.
When you’re feeling well, you positively impact everyone around you. That means family, friends and co-workers.
And when life gets busy, self-care is normally the first thing we sacrifice. We fall into the false belief that taking time for ourselves during busy times is indulgent. But the reverse is true. When we are too busy to take care of ourselves is when we need self-care the most!
Get out of your routine.
Learn a new thing! Did you know that novelty:·
- increases your dopamine, the neurotransmitter that regulates your perception of pleasure and activates motivation?
- promotes creativity, inspiration and energy?
Create a tangible way to care for yourself.
Crafting/creating soothes and calms, forcing your attention to the task at hand. DIY projects allow you to connect with others, learn a new skill, get lost in the focus of activity, and surge with pride and empowerment over a completed, yours-only creative achievement.
Enjoy the gratifying process of creating something.
Indulge in your self-care. Making time to be creative is a form of self-care – a self-loving activity that invites you into a mentally-focused place. Sign up for a workshop. Bring a friend. Or go solo.
What are you doing for self-care?
